Is this for you?

This isn't intended to be a typography masterclass or an advanced technical seminar, so if you already have a degree in Typography or you're a pro with a string of fonts to your name, the answer is, probably not.

But if you have some experience in graphic design and you're contemplating your first font, this overview might be just what you need. It's pitched at the sort of level that I would have found useful not so long ago.

Making a font can be easy; making a good font is a little more demanding. To make a great font might be beyond us, but let's have a go anyway. Making fonts is a backwards and forwards process so read all four pages before you get stuck in – it may not turn you into an expert but you'll have enough knowledge to be dangerous.

Although western cultures generally credit Gutenberg with the invention of movable type in the fifteenth century, printing on this principle emerged in China some hundreds of years before.
